Dear film makers, researchers, producers, circuit benders, painters, sculptors, VJs, DJs, students and teachers, dear friends of EMERGEANDSEE!

As you probably know, our three festival sections (short films, audio/visual exhibition and lectures) now centre on an annual topic.

The festival topic for 2011 will be: En Détail.

We thought the Detail to be a small but strong unit in our everyday perception, thinking and creating. The philosophical fascination with Micro-/Macrocosm, optical tools and artistic techniques have a long history. Today, where most digital stuff surrounding us consists of huge amounts pixels and samples, the obsession with the tiny details has probably even increased. We want more megapixels, higher sampling rates, higher FPS, slower slow motion, shorter tweets, so we can read faster, zoom in further, investigate more closely.

On the other hand: We need the big picture.

So, after looking at the Metropolis in 2010, a rather big unit, when talking about space and society, we now look forward to gathering artistic and theoretical views on the Détail of people from all around the world in order to present them at the Berlin Event in May 2011.

Our call for entries goes out to anyone creating images, thoughts, sounds or objects that could add their detail to EMERGEANDSEE 2011!

Please spread the word:

EMERGEANDSEE would be nothing without all the great work that we get sent. Starting this year, the festival will feature three sections: Film screenings, audiovisual exhibition and our conference, all three consisting of contributions from all over the world.

Hybrid Metropolis: in between spaces

The 2010 topic is centered around social and urban spaces. Space does not have to be taken literally here, as theorists have established alternate concepts, bringing cultural backgrounds, different life concepts and hybrid identities into focus.

In big cities, social issues, contrast and processes show very clearly, that’s why EMERGEANDSEE 2010 focuses on the Hybrid Metropolis.

Film screenings / exhibition

EMERGEANDSEE has been a pure short film festival for the past 9 years. But we have always felt that there is great audiovisual work that we want to show but that only works off the cinema screen. Loops, still images, interactive installations, audio experiments – our exhibition will extend the possibilities to approach the topic.

The call for entries is for both sections, submission deadline is April 15 2010.

Conference

As we had wanted theoretical reflection to play a part of our festival, we have already established an accompanying conference two year ago. Discussing the future of the moving image (2008) and adopted/adapted images (2009), brilliant people have presented their thoughts and ideas to an interested audience.

If you are researcher, theorist or practitioner wishing to contribute a presentation on our 2010 topic, please have a look at the call for papers.
